The Minnesota Vikings face a critical decision at quarterback, with two main options. One path involves sticking with Kirk Cousins, known for his consistent performance akin to a reliable morning cup of Starbucks. The alternative path, the “Tunnel of Quarterbacks,” presents various options but carries the risk of a less favorable outcome, reminiscent of past experiences with players like Christian Ponder.

Both choices have their advantages and drawbacks. However, in the midst of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s competitive rebuilding approach, there seems to be a desire to merge the two options and establish a quarterback succession plan.

As the offseason approaches, this appears to be the preferred direction for many Vikings fans. Retaining Cousins while simultaneously grooming his successor would allow a smoother transition, akin to providing water wings for the new quarterback instead of throwing them into the deep end. However, with time running out, questions arise about the feasibility of implementing an effective succession plan.

Cousins, despite occasional ups and downs, brings stability to the quarterback position. His performance can be likened to a baseball hitter with a consistent .300 average throughout a season, ensuring the team remains competitive. Yet, the challenge lies in Cousins’ age (36) and the risk associated with returning from a torn Achilles, suffered in October.

The Vikings faced a dilemma when Cousins got injured, with a 4-4 record at that point in the season. Despite the public opinion shifting towards retaining Cousins after a strong start to the season, the inherent risks of a 36-year-old quarterback coming off a significant injury necessitate preparing for the future.

The team must explore drafting a quarterback, as they have never started a rookie in Week 1. Ideally, they aim to avoid immediately starting a rookie, with potential options like Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye requiring a trade-up, considering competition from teams like the Washington Commanders and the New England Patriots.

While Cousins is aware of the team’s pursuit of a future quarterback, negotiations hinge on long-term security rather than solely monetary aspects. Cousins expressed a preference for a structured deal that goes beyond a one-season commitment.

Last year, there were reports that Cousins was open to a “discount” deal, guaranteeing his salaries for 2024 and 2025. However, the Vikings did not proceed with this option, potentially missing an opportunity to secure Cousins while planning for his successor in the upcoming draft.

Exploring veteran options like Baker Mayfield, Ryan Tannehill, or Gardner Minshew is also considered, each with their own pros and cons. Mayfield, despite being a popular name, might seek a more secure deal, raising concerns about long-term stability.

The complexity of finding the right succession plan for the quarterback position has left Vikings fans in anticipation, with uncertainties about whether the team has waited too long or will find a suitable solution aligned with their aspirations.
