After acquiring Kyle Tucker in a trade, the Chicago Cubs are looking to build on that momentum and make further moves to strengthen their roster. While the trade for the left-handed slugger was significant, the Cubs should not stop there given the resources they’ve already invested. Beyond Tucker, the Cubs have made some other moves this offseason, though most of them have been more modest. These additions, while not flashy, have still helped improve the overall roster.
As they continue to tweak their lineup, the Cubs have prioritized strengthening their rotation and bullpen, which were key areas of concern in 2024. Offensively, the Cubs struggled throughout the previous season, and unless they make improvements at the plate, they risk facing similar challenges in the coming year. Although their pitching staff and bullpen were inconsistent at times, the team’s focus should still be on upgrading offensively, as success in that area is essential to competing at the highest level.
That said, pitching remains the foundation of any championship contender, which is why targeting a proven veteran like Carlos Estévez could be a game-changing move. Estévez, who is expected to sign a two- or three-year contract, would immediately step into the closer role for the Cubs, adding a reliable option at the back end of their bullpen. Caleb Moody of Just Baseball notes that Estévez is a logical fit for the Cubs, citing his ability to provide critical innings in high-leverage situations. Moody also highlights the Cubs’ bullpen struggles in 2024, where they ranked 12th in ERA, 17th in FIP, 19th in WHIP, and 14th in opponents’ batting average. Despite some solid arms in the bullpen like Nate Pearson, Keegan Thompson, and newly acquired Eli Morgan, the Cubs are still lacking a definitive closer heading into 2025. Estévez would fill that void and offer some insurance against potential regression from the team’s existing bullpen pieces.
During the 2024 trade deadline, Estévez was widely regarded as one of the best relievers available. Although his free-agent market might not be as competitive as his trade market, he remains an All-Star-caliber talent with a proven track record at a high level. While the Cubs do have some promising young bullpen options, they lack the experience that Estévez brings, particularly when it comes to closing out games in high-pressure moments. Signing Estévez would provide the Cubs with the veteran presence they need to stabilize their bullpen and potentially help propel them toward playoff contention in 2025.
