The Boston Red Sox have significantly improved their starting rotation heading into the 2025 season, with Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Walker Buehler, Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, and Kutter Crawford all on the roster, barring any trades or injuries. This positions the Red Sox in a favorable spot, but their next priority is to strengthen their lineup with more right-handed power, and former Houston Astros star Alex Bregman should be their top target. Bregman is arguably the best offensive player still available on the free-agent market. There has been considerable discussion surrounding the Red Sox’s infield, including the possibility of moving Rafael Devers off third base and trading Triston Casas, but with the pitching rotation solidified, it would be unexpected for the team to trade Casas for another pitcher. The question of who will play second base also remains unanswered.

Bregman could be an ideal fit for the Red Sox, as they could initially sign him to play second base, and later shift him to third base if they decide to move Devers. At 30 years old, Bregman had an impressive 2024 season, hitting 26 home runs and driving in 75 RBIs with Houston. However, with the Astros recently acquiring Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes, it appears unlikely that Bregman will return to Houston, making him a prime candidate for other teams. Although the specifics of his free-agent deal remain uncertain, Bregman recently completed a five-year, $100 million contract with the Astros and is expected to receive a raise in his next contract.

If the Red Sox are serious about upgrading their infield and adding a significant piece to their lineup, Bregman should be their target. His experience and offensive production make him an ideal addition to a team looking to contend, especially now that their pitching rotation is looking much stronger.
