The Boston Red Sox have been closely associated with former Houston Astros All-Star Alex Bregman, who is considered one of the top offensive players still available in free agency. Throughout the offseason, Bregman has been linked to the Red Sox, with a notable connection to their manager, Alex Cora. But what could a potential deal look like?
The largest contract for an infielder this offseason so far has been Willy Adames’ seven-year, $182 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. It was also reported that the Astros previously offered Bregman a six-year deal worth approximately $156 million, although that offer didn’t lead to an agreement. Bregman, who will turn 31 at the start of the 2025 season, is expected to receive a deal similar in length and structure to Adames’ contract, considering they are both in a similar age range. Given Bregman’s success, including a World Series title, his deal could have a slightly higher annual value compared to Adames’ $26 million per year. A fair estimate for Bregman’s contract would likely be in the range of $28 million annually.
A potential five-year deal worth $140 million would offer a $28 million annual salary, a significant increase from the five-year, $100 million contract he previously had with Houston. Alternatively, a six-year deal for $168 million could be an attractive option, offering more than what Houston initially proposed earlier in the offseason while avoiding the complexity of a seventh year. According to Spotrac, Bregman’s value is projected at four years and $119 million, or an annual salary of about $29.75 million. The Athletic’s Tim Britton speculated that Bregman could sign a seven-year deal worth $189 million, equating to $27 million per year.
While other teams are also vying for Bregman’s services, the Astros seem to be out of the running, potentially giving the Red Sox an edge. A deal worth six years and $168 million, or around $28 million per year, seems like a reasonable estimate for what it would take to land Bregman. In the end, it looks like Bregman will sign a deal worth $27-$29 million annually, most likely over a six- or seven-year term.
