In an Australian Open loss to Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic‘s coach Goran Ivanisevic has acknowledged that the Serbian was not hurt or coping with anything; rather, it was just a bad day for the Serb.
Djokovic’s run at the Australian Open this year came to an early end when Sinner defeated him 6-1 6-2 6-7 (6) 6-3.
In addition to losing to Sinner, Djokovic was essentially overpowered by the Italian, as it was the first time the world No. 1 failed to generate even one break point throughout the course of a Grand Slam match. It was Djokovic’s first loss at Melbourne Park since 2018 as well as his first setback in a semifinal match at the Australian Open.
Sinner, 22, won his first Grand Slam championship after defeating Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final.
We were all clear that he had to lose sooner rather than later. It’s unfortunate that it transpired in this manner, but Ivanisevic told Jutarnji that if one is not 100%, one has nothing to ask for when it comes to Sinner.
And you can lose even if you’re giving it your all (against Sinner). But from the first round on, something about the Australian Open was off for Novak. Alright, let us proceed, nothing too grave.”
Even though Djokovic solely attributed Sinner’s defeat to his performance, some conjectured that the Serbian player was unwell or wounded. At the United Cup, Djokovic struggled with a wrist injury that was before to the Australian Open.
No, he wasn’t worried by anything, and he was healthy, but it didn’t work out. Given that he is also a human, it might also happen to him. However, I’m happy Sinner was the opponent if he had to lose, Ivanisevic remarked.
Ivanisevic is currently back in his native Croatia. Ivanisevic reaffirmed in the same interview that Djokovic’s next competition will be the Indian Wells Masters in early March. It will be Djokovic’s first time appearing in the desert since 2019.
