The Indianapolis Colts have already made several acquisitions; however, they are not for the roster this time.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Colts are adding Alex Tanney, a former quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, to the offensive staff.
Fowler said on X: “According to a source, Alex Tanney, the former quarterbacks coach of the Eagles, is joining the offensive staff of the #Colts.” Tanney meets up with Shane Steichen, whom she knew back in Philadelphia.”
Coach Shane Steichen of the Colts is quite familiar with Tanney. In 2021–2022, Tanney was the offensive assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach for the Eagles, while Steichen served as the coordinator of offense.
Tanney helped Steichen develop one of the NFL’s most lethal quarterbacks, Jalen Hurts, into a great quarterback in Philadelphia. Tanney was part of Philly’s offensive team as they came close to winning Super Bowl LVII.
In his second season as a professional, Tanney will work with Steichen, offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, and quarterbacks coach Cam Turner to develop Anthony Richardson, a young, explosive passer.Tanney has more NFL quarterbacking experience having been a backup for the New York Giants (2019) and Tennessee Titans (2015).
Steichen believes that this hire will improve the offensive attack. Tanney will be the first passing game coordinator the Colts have had since 2020 in his official role on the staff.
Additionally, according to James Boyd of The Athletic, Indianapolis is appointing Justin Hamilton, a former Titans defensive quality control coach, as their assistant defensive backs coach.
Boyd revealed the information on X: “According to a league source, Justin Hamilton will be joining the #Colts as their new assistant DBs coach. During the 2023 campaign, he coached the #Titans in defensive quality control.
Mike Mitchell, whose contract was not renewed this offseason, will be replaced by Hamilton.
Mike Mitchell, the previous defensive backs coach for the Colts, will be replaced by Hamilton. With this addition, defensive backs coach Ron Milus will probably be able to ease the transition of a youthful corps that had some rocky patches during the season.
After four years at Virginia Tech, 2023 marked Hamilton’s first season as an NFL coach. Eventually, he was elevated to defensive coordinator prior to accepting the Titans position.
Tanney and Hamilton give fresh perspectives to a Colts coaching staff that was already youthful. Is Tanney capable of taking the offensive to the next level? Will Hamilton provide effective support to defenders such as Nick Cross, Dallis Flowers, Jaylon Jones, and JuJu Brents?
Steichen has probably had his eye on these intriguing additions since the Colts’ season came to an end in Week 18 against the Houston Texans. We’ll see what other adjustments come about as the 2024 Indianapolis off-season is just getting underway.
